The Nuremberg Christmas markets are considered by many to be the most beautiful in Europe. But what is so special about them that they have managed to earn this title?! The magic that one can breathe while walking among its thousands of little wooden houses emanating the scent of mulled wine is alone worth the trip to this famous German town.

Nuremberg Christmas markets: the most beautiful in Europe

Nuremberg Christmas markets

Here you can breathe in the magical atmosphere of Christmas, with snow covering the sloping roofs of the wooden houses, music resounding in the air and the smell of delicious local delicacies. If this is the atmosphere you are looking for, then the Nuremberg Christmas markets in northern Bavaria are definitely for you.

From the first Friday in Advent and until December 24th, the Hauptmarkt, the Nuremberg Market Square, hosts the largest Christmas market, the Christkindlesmarkt. Known as the market of the Infant Jesus, it is the historic one, inaugurated with a solemn celebration much awaited in the city. At nightfall on the appointed day, according to a centuries-old tradition, the Christmas Angel, one of the symbols of Christmas in Nuremberg, appears on the porch of the Frauenkirche, the Church of Our Lady. From there, he performs a prologue accompanied by solemn music and a choir of children singing sweet Christmas carols.

One of the characteristics of this market is that it is set up exclusively in wood and fabric, with a strict ban on plastic garlands. Having visited many Christmas markets around the world, I can say that Nuremberg’s is one of the few that sells truly original and zero-kilometre products. I have seen very few Chinese-made products and the prices are much more competitive than in other European cities. In fact, in Nuremberg, unlike other markets, I was able to buy handicrafts and small Christmas souvenirs without paying a capital sum.

In Nuremberg you will find Christmas markets scattered almost everywhere. In small squares, along streets, over bridges, in underground stations, in small parks built along the old city walls. In short, you will be spoiled for choice and never get bored!
